Kuhnemann emerges as Australia's injury woes continue

With Marcus Stoinis added to Australia's list of injuries in Sri Lanka and Ashton Agar in doubt, the door is ajar for spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to earn his first international appearance.

The 25-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner has a reputable domestic record for Queensland in domestic One Day cricket, and has performed on Australia A's adjacent tour of Sri Lanka, most notably picking up 3/43 against the hosts' A side.

Kuhnemann's victims were all full Sri Lankan internationals, claiming Oshada Fernando, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva.

With Stoinis ruled out for the remainder of the ODI series, Travis Head also earns a re-call for the touring Australian side, who have been forced into a reshuffle given the spate of injuries.

On top of Stoinis' side strain and Ashton Agar's similar injury, Mitchell Marsh (calf) is being managed, Mitchell Starc (finger) remains out and Kane Richardson (hamstring) is also unavailable for selection. Sean Abbott broke a finger at the beginning of the tour, while Cameron Green has been held back from limited overs cricket with an eye to the upcoming World Test Championship series.

The five ODIs are not part of Cricket World Cup Super League and thus do not form part of Australia's qualification for India 2023.

Australia are 1-0 up in the series, with the second match to be played in Kandy on Thursday.
